Guitar legends Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have unveiled the official music video for their joint track The Sea Of Emotion, Pt. 1, a song that pays homage to their five-decade-long friendship and formative years. Directed by Satriani’s son Z.Z. Satriani, the video is a nostalgic trip to the ’70s, a period that significantly influenced both musicians.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, Satriani recounted, “When Steve and I decided the time had finally come for us to collaborate on an album, I immediately thought of our humble beginnings…”

“That field became The Sea Of Emotion. We would hang out there late at night and share our deepest thoughts.”

Vai echoed the sentiment, stating, “50 years later, it has been memorialized in melody and groove.”

The collaboration represents a pinnacle moment for both artists, with Vai describing it as “perhaps the most rewarding musical collaboration I’ve ever engaged in.”

The pair first performed The Sea Of Emotion, Pt. 1 live on March 22 at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida, marking the beginning of their Satch/Vai tour, which is set to continue through early May.

Excitement
In anticipation of the tour, Satriani reminisced, “Every time we play together it takes me back to when we were teenagers, eating and breathing music every second of the day…”

Vai also expressed his excitement, “He is my favorite guitarist to jam with, and now we have another opportunity to take it to the stage.”

Vai has previously spoken about the profound influence Satriani had on him as a young guitarist, crediting his former teacher with shaping his musicality and technique.

“When I was 12… I started taking lessons. And my lessons with Joe were all that mattered to me”, Vai said. He praised Satriani’s ability to infuse music with soul and inspiration, a quality that has continued to influence him throughout his career.

Eager to learn
Satriani has also reflected on his experience teaching Vai, recalling the early days when a young Vai showed up eager to learn. “Steve Vai was 12 years old and could not play guitar at all when I met him”, Satriani told a radio station.

Over the years, Satriani has mentored many now-famous guitarists, helping to shape the future of rock and guitar music.
