Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of RUSH reunited onstage to honor the late Canadian musician Gordon Lightfoot at a tribute concert on May 24th at Massey Hall in Toronto. The event featured many Canadian artists celebrating Lightfoot, who passed away last year.

Lee and Lifeson performed Lightfoot’s The Way I Feel with Blue Rodeo, surprising the audience after being billed as “L + L.”

Psych-folk piece
Their six-minute performance turned the folk song into a psych-folk piece, allowing them to showcase their prog-rock skills. Lee said, “It was important for us to pay tribute to Gordon… We found that in ‘The Way I Feel.’ Its structure was loose and more open to interpretation.”

Prog
After the show, Lightfoot’s daughter, Meredith Moon, commented, “Leave it to RUSH to make ‘The Way I Feel’ sound prog.” Lee and Lifeson also joined other performers for the finale, Summerside of Life.

Since the passing of RUSH drummer Neil Peart in 2020, Lee and Lifeson have occasionally performed together but have no plans to reunite the band.
