Opeth Unveil Dark Family Saga in Upcoming Album
Swedish prog metal band OPETH is set to release a new concept album that promises to be their darkest and heaviest work in decades. The Last Will And Testament due out on October 11, tells a gripping story of family secrets and betrayal set in the 1920s.
Frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt explains the album’s theme, saying, “I have become quite interested in family, and the idea that blood is not always thicker than water.” He adds, “I love this record. I have to say it (write it). Maybe I’m proud, even?”
Guest appearances from rock legends
The album features guest appearances from rock legends Ian Anderson of JETHRO TULL and Joey Tempest of EUROPE. Anderson lends his voice to narrate parts of the story and plays his signature flute, while Tempest contributes backing vocals, writes Blabbermouth.
Åkerfeldt’s death metal growls make a comeback on this album, for the first time since 2008. He comments, “I like to be unfashionable, in a way. So, when it comes to bringing that kind of death metal vocal back, I wanted it to happen when people had stopped caring… And I guess that’s now!”
New drummer
The band’s new drummer, Waltteri Väyrynen, also makes his recorded debut with OPETH on this album. Åkerfeldt praises his skills, saying, “We sat there at Rockfield Studios, and he just was doing these insane, technical songs in one take.”
