Metallica’s Kirk Hammett Reveals the Song That Brings Him to Tears

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett recently revealed that the Metallica song Junior Dad brings him to tears. The song is featured on Lulu, the collaborative album Metallica created with Lou Reed that wasn’t well-received by fans or critics.
“That album means so much to me for a number of reasons,” Hammett said in the interview with the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast while promoting his new book about his guitar collection, writes Audio Ink Radio. Hammett admitted: “I can’t listen to it, man. Brings me to tears.”
Tears in our eyes
He shared the story of how Lou Reed first played the song for him and James Hetfield: “And by the end of the song, I looked at James, and James looked at me and we both had tears in our eyes. Then Lou Reed came in and saw us both crying in the kitchen. He’s smiling and he said, ‘I got you, didn’t I?'”
Hammett’s new book, “The Collection: Kirk Hammett,” is a 400-page coffee table book showing his amazing guitars. The book features special instruments like his first Gibson, a 1979 Flying V, and the famous “Greeny” – a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard previously owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore.
Greeny
Speaking about Greeny, Hammett said: “It’s so special. I don’t really feel like it’s mine. I feel like I’m the caretaker. I feel so fortunate that I got that guitar. It’s changed my guitar style.”
The book project has been years in the making according to Gibson’s president and CEO, Cesar Gueikian, who worked closely with Hammett on selecting which guitars to include.
