Keith Richards outspoken on contemporary music
Keith Richards has made it clear that his musical preferences lean heavily towards the blues, a genre he has cherished for decades. Despite being a pivotal figure in rock ‘n’ roll history, guitar player of The Rolling Stones, admits he hasn’t tuned into rock bands for many years, showing a steadfast devotion to the blues roots that initially inspired him.
In an interview reported by the Daily Star, Richards expressed his disinterest in the rock genre that followed The Rolling Stones, highlighting his early influences like Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters.
He credits The Stones with repackaging this American blues sound and sharing it back with the United States, spiced with their own unique additions.
Distaste
Richards has also been vocal about his distaste for rap music, which he once described to the New York Daily News as music for “tone-deaf people,” critiquing the genre for its reliance on beats over melody.
Interestingly, Sir Mick Jagger, the frontman of The Rolling Stones, shared that Keith was initially the one who had a strong affinity for pop music, particularly The Beatles.
Obsession
According to an interview with Mojo magazine, Jagger recounted how Keith’s obsession with The Beatles influenced some of The Stones’ own pop hits, even though Richards eventually moved away from that sound.
