Jimi Hendrix’s Legacy Lives On: NYC Street Gets a New Name

New York City has renamed a street to honor rock legend Jimi Hendrix. A part of West 8th Street in Greenwich Village is now called ‘Jimi Hendrix Way’.

The new street sign is outside Electric Lady Studios. Hendrix opened this studio in 1970, just before he died. It was special because it was the first recording studio owned by an artist.

Steven Van Zandt said: “Nobody deserves a street more than Jimi Hendrix.”

New movie
This street naming comes at the same time as a new movie about Hendrix and his studio. The movie is called Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, helped make the film.

The movie will be shown in theaters around the world. It will start playing on August 9, 2024, in New York City.

An hour’s worth of music
Evan Saxon, from the company showing the movie, said: “Listen to an hour’s worth of music on your favorite playlist, DSP or radio station and odds are at least one of the songs was recorded at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios.”
