Jimi Hendrix’s Final Recordings Come to Life in New Box Set
A new collection of Jimi Hendrix’s last studio recordings is set to be released on September 13. The box set, called Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision includes 39 tracks, with 38 of them never released before.
These recordings were made at Electric Lady Studios in New York City during the summer of 1970, just before Hendrix died. The collection comes with a documentary film about the creation of the studio.
Musical vision
Janie Hendrix, Jimi’s sister, said, “My brother had a musical vision. With this project, it felt appropriate to shed light not only on his own music, but also on his lasting contribution of Electric Lady Studios. He was driven internally to build a home base where he could record everything he felt.”
The box set includes a new version of the song Angel [Take 7] without added drums. It also has other unreleased songs and different versions of known Hendrix tracks, writes American Blues Scene.
Jimi Hendrix Way
To celebrate the release, New York City will rename part of West 8th Street to “Jimi Hendrix Way” on August 8. The documentary will premiere in Manhattan on August 9.
The collection shows Hendrix’s work on his planned album First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. It includes demo recordings, new song arrangements, and live studio takes.
John McDermott, the film’s director, said, “While Jimi Hendrix’s death robbed the public of so much potential music, the continued success of his recording studio provides a lasting legacy beyond his own music.”
