Guitarist Brent Purgason Exits GWAR After 11-Year Run

Brent Purgason, known to fans as Pustulus Maximus, has announced his departure from shock rock band GWAR after performing with them for over a decade.

“11 years ago I had the privilege of joining the greatest shock rock and roll band in the world. Today, I announce my departure from it,” Purgason stated in his announcement. The guitarist confirmed that he’s leaving on good terms with the band.

Heartfelt statement
In his heartfelt statement shared on November 6, 2023, as writes Metal Injection, Purgason expressed deep gratitude to GWAR fans: “I want to extend my utmost appreciation for all the support given to me by the fans over the years. They have been kind, generous and enthusiastic for the band and my character throughout my tenure and I couldn’t ask to ever perform in front of a greater group of people. It has been an honor to spill blood on you.”

Despite leaving his performance role, Purgason indicated he’ll maintain ties with the band: “GWAR will continue to have my support. I am leaving on good terms and will still be around to help out some behind the scenes. To what degree, I don’t know yet but our creative lives are still very much tied together.”

Part-owner of the band
Purgason joined GWAR in 2012 and was not only a performer but also became a part-owner of the band. He recalled the memorable phone call from Dave Brockie (the late GWAR frontman) informing him he had joined the band, noting that ‘this was a very different band when I joined and I was a very different person. People grow and priorities change’.

GWAR has not yet made an official statement about Purgason’s departure or announced his replacement.
