Eddie Van Halen’s Family Shares Final Farewell with Pizza Tribute

Guitarist Eddie van Halen flanked by Van Halen singer David Lee Roth during their reunion tour press conference in 2007.

In a poignant gesture to commemorate Eddie Van Halen, his wife Valerie Bertinelli and his son Wolfgang Van Halen ordered pizza to the hospital room, moments after his passing in October 2020. Van Halen was suffering from throat cancer.

“I forget who suggested it, but we were like, ‘Should we have pizza?’ … Because he couldn’t eat, and the last thing Ed really wanted was pizza”, Bertinelli explained, hoping the decision would not be perceived as inappropriate.

Bertinelli recounted the emotional experience to People.com, stating, “I didn’t want to believe it was happening. Even while it was happening, I wasn’t believing it was happening.”

Heartfelt finale exchange
She also shared the heartfelt final exchange between them: “He knew how much I loved him. I knew how much he loved me. The last words he said to me and to Wolfie were, ‘I love you’.”

Wolfgang Van Halen took to social media to announce the loss of his father (65), expressing his profound grief: “He was the best father I could ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.” He continued, “My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”
