Dave Grohl, Scott Ian, and Charlie Benante Team Up for Bad Brains Tribute
Dave Grohl singer/guitarist of Foo Fighters fame has teamed up with Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Charlie Benante to form G.B.I (Grohl, Benante, Ian) for a special Record Store Day release. They’re covering Bad Brains’ The Regulator with only 3,000 copies available worldwide on April 20th, 2024.
This limited edition 7” vinyl is more than just a collector’s item; proceeds will support the medical treatment of Bad Brains’ vocalist H.R. (Paul D. Hudson), who is battling SUNCT syndrome.
This unique collaboration was sparked during Anthrax’s recording sessions at Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles.
Casual exchange
The idea quickly took shape following a casual exchange between Scott Ian and Dave Grohl, as Ian recalls: “I texted Dave the next morning and said: ‘Hey! Good to see ya the other day. Are you rehearsing today? I’ll be there doing guitars. Wanna record a Minor Threat song? Bad Brains?’ He replied immediately with the Spotify link for The Regulator. I said I’d be there at 12:30pm and he said, ‘See you at 1.’ It was that simple.”
The trio recorded The Regulator live in just two takes, capturing the raw energy and spirit of the original. Benante contributed the cover art, while Grohl took on both drumming and vocal duties, with Ian on guitar and Benante on bass. The project is a heartfelt homage to their punk heroes and a way to give back to the music community, both by aiding H.R. and supporting independent record stores.
