Cantrell’s Solo Blaze: Alice in Chains Still Burning

Jerry Cantrell, guitarist of Alice in Chains, live on stage.

Guitarist and songwriter of Alice in Chains Jerry Cantrell recently discussed his new solo album and the future of his band in an interview with Guitar Player.

Cantrell’s latest solo effort, “I Want Blood,” was released on October 18, 2024. This follows his 2021 solo album “Brighten,” marking a productive period outside of Alice in Chains.

Loyalty
Despite his solo success, Cantrell reassured fans about his commitment to Alice in Chains, stating, “Obviously, it’s no secret where my loyalty lies, and that’s with the band.” He emphasized that he started the band in 1987 and remains committed to it.

Regarding the new album, Cantrell described it as heavier than his previous work, saying, “I like to think I’ve written some music in the past that has some weight to it, but this one has some real fire.”

The album features collaborations with notable musicians, including Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) and Robert Trujillo (Metallica).

Future plans
When asked about future plans, Cantrell remained open-ended: “I’m gonna live this for the next year, and then maybe I’ll go torch some guitars.” This suggests he’s focusing on his solo work for now but doesn’t rule out future Alice in Chains projects.
