After Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, Queen guitar player Brian May started to work on his second album, Another World, and wrote a song about his guitar hero Jeff Beck, called The Guv’nor. He nvited the American to record it.

Beck was surprised and honored. May recalled in a recent interview. “He’s like, ‘No, no, it’s not about me!’ I sketched out the places where I wanted him to explore but gave him free rein of what he could play, and then plugged in once he came into the studio.”

Phenomenon
May admired Beck since seeing him perform with The Yardbirds. “Jeff is a phenomenon, an absolute phenomenon of the world, and it was extraordinary for me to be able to interact with him in this way and I’ve said that he’s the governor, he is my hero and I would stand by that.”
